Tr\u00e6et er et mammuttr\u00e6 (ogs\u00e5 kaldet k\u00e6mpefyr) med det meget beskrivende latinske navn Sequoiadendron giganteum. Tr\u00e6et er ikke verdens h\u00f8jeste tr\u00e6, men det tr\u00e6 der har det st\u00f8rste volumen.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tr\u00e6et General Sherman findes i Giant Forest, hvor du ogs\u00e5 kan se andre store tr\u00e6er. Ud af de 10 kendte st\u00f8rste enstammede tr\u00e6er i verden, findes fem af dem i Giant Forest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>General Sherman formodes at v\u00e6re mellem 2.300 og 2.700 \u00e5r gammelt. Tr\u00e6et vejer intet mindre end omtrentligt 1.200 tons og har en rumfylde p\u00e5 omtrentligt 1.500 m3. Stammen p\u00e5 General Sherman er ca. 11 meter bred og roden ca. 31 meter bred. K\u00e6mpefyr er et tr\u00e6, som p\u00e5 et tidspunkt stopper med at vokse i h\u00f8jden, men til geng\u00e6ld s\u00e5 l\u00e6nge det er levende vokser i bredden. Det betyder at gamle k\u00e6mpefyrtr\u00e6er bliver meget brede. Det vides ikke om General Sherman er parkens \u00e6ldste tr\u00e6. De h\u00f8jeste tr\u00e6er i verden er redwood-tr\u00e6erne, som du blandt andet finder i det nordlige Californien.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tr\u00e6et er opkaldt efter General Sherman. Han var general i Nordstaternes h\u00e6r under Den Amerikanske Borgerkrig. Han var kendt for at v\u00e6re taktisk st\u00e6rk og n\u00e5desl\u00f8s. Siden blev han udn\u00e6vnt til \u00f8verstbefalende for den amerikanske h\u00e6r, hvor han brugte sine taktiske evner og sin n\u00e5del\u00f8shed til at minimere indianerne. Tr\u00e6et blev opkaldt efter ham i 1879, hvor General Sherman dengang blev betragtet som en helt. I dag afh\u00e6nger hans heltestatus nok af hvem man sp\u00f8rger.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Vil du se General Sherman skal du parkere din bil og g\u00e5 de ca. 700 meter hen til tr\u00e6et. Du skal blandt andet g\u00e5 en del trappetrin, blot s\u00e5 du er forberedt p\u00e5 at f\u00e5 tjekket kondien. Henne ved tr\u00e6et skal du forvente der er k\u00f8 til at f\u00e5 taget billede ved det. Det er uden tvivl nationalparkens hovedattraktion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Giant Forest er en stor sammenh\u00e6ngende lund af tr\u00e6er. Vi vil anbefale du bruger lidt mere tid der end blot at se General Sherman. Start med at bes\u00f8ge Giant Forest Museum. Dette museum er af nyere dato og fort\u00e6ller om de k\u00e6mpe tr\u00e6er, deres tilblivelse og deres historie.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fra Giant Forest Museum anbefaler vi som minimum at g\u00e5 den lille 1-km rundtur, der hedder The Big Trees Trail. Her kommer du ind i Giant Forest og g\u00e5r mellem t\u00e5rnh\u00f8je og meget brede mammuttr\u00e6er. Og du kommer ogs\u00e5 til den kendte Round Meadow. En smuk og frodig eng omgivet af gigantiske fyretr\u00e6er. Det er smukt og f\u00f8les som om man er et lille bitte menneske inde i en k\u00e6mpes eventyrunivers. Undervejs er der skilte der forklarer om tr\u00e6ernes tilblivelse og historie.
